Reading Notes: Narayan's Ramayana, Section C

Reading Guides for Part C: Narayan. Ramayana.

Reading notes:

A new set of brothers, Vali and Sugreeva.
Sugreeva, of a monkey race, took over his kingdom for his brother, Vali who was presumed to be dead. Sugreeva ordered the closing of a mountain, where it was believed the demon who lured Vali away, was hiding. This was not the case, and Sugreeva accidentally blocked Vali's exit from the mountain, after he had defeated the demon. Vali, who had been blessed by the Gods, and had God-like strength, attacked his Sugreeva, causing Sugreeva to run and claim asylum on a mountain where Vail would never enter. Sugreeva lost his home and his wife, because Vali would not stop and listen to him.

- Rama is recognized as Vishnu by Hanuman, and receives his devotion.
Sugreeva ask Rama to prove his power and Rama sends an arrow through all things 7.

Rama receives Sita's jewelry, that she tossed down to the ground.
Rama, and the 3 other plan their attack, and how the will save Sita. First they will fight Vali, so Sugreeva can be king, and they use the arm to defeat Ravana.
In the beginning of the chapter Vali, Narayan mentions how this seemed the be the one wrong step of Rama, and "commits a moral slip". The author claims how this is the most controversial chapter in the Ramayana, because Rama destroys a creature that had done him no harm, whom he had never met, and not least of which, all from a hidden place. I did not understand what Narayan was referring now, but now that Vali is answering Sugreeva's call to fight, I do.

The story goes on with Vali asking his wife how she can slander Rama's name, when he has proven to be worthy of much more many times. A few sentences really emphasize the respect Vali must have for Rama. THEN after Vali and his brother fight, Rama shoots Vali with his arrow, and have a very long conversation afterward that ends with Vali thanking Rama. Sugreeva is now king.

Once the rainy season has past, Sugreeva and hanuman do not show up with the promised arms. Rama's brother must go retrieve them, and find they have relaxed their devotion to Rama. After a while everything is OK, and the army arrive
Hanuman and one other heads south in search of Sita
